Blue Tigers Set for Crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers Against Singapore
Indian football fans are in for a nerve-wracking few days as the Blue Tigers prepare to take on Singapore in back-to-back AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers. The first leg will be played in Singapore, followed by the decisive return fixture in Goa.
Head coach Khalid Jamil has announced a 23-member squad for Thursday’s away clash. India’s talismanic striker Sunil Chhetri makes a welcome return to the side, bringing experience and leadership upfront. However, the team will be without key midfielders Apuia and Abhishek Singh Tekcham, both ruled out due to injuries.
Despite these absences, Jamil remains optimistic, urging his players to deliver all three points. “There can be no excuses at this stage,” the coach stated. “We have to go all out and make sure we start this qualifying round with a win.”
India and Singapore share a rich history on the football pitch. The two nations have clashed 13 times so far, with Singapore holding the edge — winning seven of those encounters. India have come out on top four times, while two matches have ended in draws.
Their most recent meeting came in 2022, a fiercely contested international friendly that ended 1-1. Ikhsan Fandi gave Singapore the lead in the 37th minute, but Ashique Kuruniyan quickly restored parity just six minutes later, ensuring a share of the spoils.
However, this time around, a draw will not be enough for the Blue Tigers. With only the group winners progressing to the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, India must secure maximum points from their remaining four fixtures to keep qualification hopes alive.
The stage is set for another high-stakes encounter — one that could define India’s path to continental glory.
