Republic of Ireland vs Portugal — Match Preview
The Republic of Ireland will be without their top scorer Evan Ferguson when they host Portugal in Thursday’s World Cup qualifier. The Roma loanee, responsible for three of Ireland’s four goals in the campaign, misses out with an ankle injury and could also sit out Sunday’s clash with Hungary.
Stephen Kenny’s selection woes deepen with Sammie Szmodics, Mark Sykes and Callum O'Dowda all sidelined, while Ryan Manning and Jayson Molumby are suspended. However, both will return in time for the Hungary game. In-form Celtic striker Johnny Kenny has earned a first senior call-up and may feature, while Troy Parrott and Adam Idah are the other attacking options up front.
Portugal, meanwhile, are also hit by injuries, with Pedro Neto (groin) and Pedro Gonçalves (muscle) forced to withdraw. Bernardo Silva is expected to take up the right-wing role, while Rafael Leão, Francisco Conceição, Francisco Trincão, and uncapped youngster Carlos Forbs are in contention for the opposite flank.
Cristiano Ronaldo, in blistering form for Al-Nassr with nine goals in eight league matches, will spearhead the attack. Remarkably, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is still chasing his first-ever goal on Irish soil after three previous attempts.
