Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano lamented his side’s lack of depth after their midweek victory, admitting: “We have many absences right now, and of course, I would love more resources and depth.”
One key absentee has been defender Tomas Avilés, who was sent off in the 3-0 defeat to Charlotte last weekend but is set to return for this clash. Luis Suárez remains a major miss as he continues to serve his three-match MLS suspension following the post-match brawl in the Leagues Cup final.
Fabrice Picault and David Ruiz are both sidelined with hamstring injuries, leaving captain Lionel Messi to carry much of the attacking load. The Argentine talisman has been in sensational form, scoring last time out to take his tally to 19 goals in 20 MLS appearances this season.
DC United, meanwhile, will be without Canadian international Lukas MacNaughton, who saw red in their clash with Orlando just after returning from a knee injury. Their attacking options are also depleted, with Kristian Fletcher ruled out long-term after cruciate ligament surgery, and Randall Leal expected to miss a fifth consecutive match.
Striker Dominique Badji is another absentee as he recovers from a hamstring strain, meaning captain Christian Benteke will once again lead the line. The Belgian remains the club’s top scorer with eight goals this campaign, while Jackson Hopkins could prove a key creative outlet, having netted three goals in his last four MLS outings — including one in the reverse fixture back in August.
