There was at least one silver lining for Liverpool supporters following Wednesday’s defeat to Crystal Palace, as head coach Arne Slot confirmed that Ryan Gravenberch has a strong chance of returning from an ankle injury in time for the weekend clash.
However, Alexander Isak and Curtis Jones (both groin) remain almost certain absentees, with Slot admitting their chances of featuring are “virtually zero.” Meanwhile, Alisson Becker (hamstring), Jeremie Frimpong (hamstring), and Giovanni Leoni (ACL) are all sidelined for this match as well as the upcoming Champions League meeting with Real Madrid.
Young defender Amara Nallo is suspended following his midweek red card, though the academy product was unlikely to feature in the first-team setup regardless.
Among Liverpool’s many returning stars, Mohamed Salah is chasing history — the Egyptian is just one goal or assist away from equalling the Premier League record for the most goal contributions for a single club. His tally of 275 is one short of Wayne Rooney’s 276 for Manchester United.
For Aston Villa, Unai Emery will be unable to call upon Harvey Elliott, who is ineligible to face his parent club. The midfielder was left out of the squad for the win over Manchester City last weekend regardless.
The visitors will also be without creative duo Emiliano Buendía and Youri Tielemans, with the former sustaining a minor foot injury against City. Andres Garcia (unspecified issue) also remains out. Buendía’s absence could open up a selection battle between Jadon Sancho and Donyell Malen for a spot in the forward line — Sancho replaced the Argentine last time out but was later withdrawn due to fitness concerns rather than form.
